Choosing A Memorable Company Name
Choosing a company name is key to the success of your business and it should be given as much thought and consideration as your business plan and marketing plan.
Ideally, your company name should be memorable and meaningful. A task perhaps easier said than done, so we have broken the process down for you to consider each element in the process of defining a memorable company name.
The first aspect to consider is that your company name should be meaningful and convey an image in the 'minds eye' of what your business or service is about.
For example i.e.
Derbyshire Stone Fireplaces Ltd
Is far more specific, memorable and meaningful than say
David's Fireplaces Ltd
You would have no trouble figuring out exactly the service offered by the first company name.
However, if you were considering expanding your services into other types of stone then this would not be a good choice since its name depicts only one type of stone i.e. Derbyshire stone.
It's important to bear in mind, the geographic area/scope of service your business covers and also any possible future expansion. In short make sure your company name can expand if your business does.
At the same time, avoid generic company names that are essentially meaningless and therefore not memorable.
Don't get clever with words or connotations - you want people to be able to remember your company name easily and not be confused by long or 'nonsense whacky' names people will have no hope of remembering.
Keep your company name short - just long enough to portray the purpose of the company.
The best place to start is by brainstorming all words that relate to your business or service.
Write all your ideas down and think about the emotions each word conveys or represents. Better still show your list of words to another person to see if they evoke the same or different emotions.
Narrow down your list to the most appropriate name choices.
Your next step is to check with Companies House to see if this name is available and also to do a domain name search to see if anyone has bought the domain name for your intended company name - if they have you may want to reconsider your company name choice.
In summary your choice of company name should be short, meaningful, easy to remember and pronounce. Its name shouldn't limit the potential growth of your business in the future geographically or by the products and services offered.
