Can I run a limited company from my home address?
The short answer to this is, yes you can run a limited company
from your home address and use your home as the registered office.
A registered office is a requirement of all companies and is
the official place where all documents and correspondence are sent to and from.
The address has to be an actual physical location, you cannot use a p.o box
address. The reason behind this is that the public have a right to visit
your office should they so wish and also to allow for the delivery of documents
by hand.
Many people running a limited company from home will elect to
use their accountant as their registered address and certainly this is one way
but it is preferable to have your mail coming directly to you simply because of
the time element of forwarding mail on. However, please be sure you have a good
relationship with your accountant before doing this to ensure that all documents
and correspondence are promptly forwarded on to you.
If your place of office changes at any time you should inform
Companies House of the change of registered address by using Form 287.
Once the form is registered the change of address becomes effective. Up
until that time any document may be served on the previous address for a period
of 14 days after the registration of the change of address form.
As long as Companies House and the tax office have the address
there should be no problems.
However, one aspect you might wish to take into consideration
is the type of business you are running from home. For example, if you are
a mechanic and have several cars parked inappropriately on or around where
you live then your neighbours may well get upset with the noise and intrusion.
Equally, if your business involves receiving large quantities of deliveries,
again your neighbours may well get upset. But if you are running an online
business or service that does not require large amounts of stock being delivered
to your home or many clients coming and going this should not pose a problem.
If you are a tenant you should really advise your landlord
that you are operating a limited company from his property and check that he is
ok with that. Check your tenancy agreement as well as some state that you
are not allowed to run a business from the rented property so you will be in
breach of your tenancy agreement if you go ahead without permission. Also if you
are a tenant and you are allowed to run a limited company from your address
consider first how long you intend to stay at the property before using that
address as the registered one.
In summary, you run a limited company from your home address
just make sure you have considered your type of business and all possible future
eventualities.
