How to Manage Cash Flow

Cash flow is one of the most important aspects to consider for any business large or small. It doesn't matter how good your product or service is without cash flow this is a major determining factor of why businesses fail. Cash flow literally is the difference between the success or failure of a business so the good management of cash flow is vital.

Remember you need cash flow to be able to pay suppliers, creditors, employees and/or the day to day running of your business requirements - it's the lifeblood of your business.

Simply put you need to plan for money coming in and money due out over the short and longer term. Managing your cash flow successfully leaves you free to focus on the important aspect of growing your business.

The goal with managing cash flow is to know and plan for payments and large expenses when they are due. This can be difficult because sometimes money due to your business may not arrive when it should and leaves a business unable to pay large expenses when they are due.

Money should be set aside to deal with these uncertainties and also to cater for bills that need to be paid regularly.

A good way to ensure this is to prepare weekly and monthly cash-flow projections so that there are no unwelcome surprises and you know at any given point the cash on hand available.

However, sooner or later it is quite possible that you will find yourself in a situation where you do not any enough cash flow to pay your bills. The key here is to be aware of the problem before it arrives on your doorstep so that you can plan a course of action for it e.g. a short-term loan from the bank.

If you are aware of the problems before they hit you are much more likely to be able to get help from other sources rather than trying to 'fire-fight' at the last minute.

Treat cash flow as the life-blood of your business and make sure you know at any given-time your cash flow position.
